Small business systems, built by hand.

Bourn Labs is a one-operator studio building custom business apps, websites, and local-SEO systems for trade and hospitality companies. Real software on real infrastructure — quoting, invoicing, customer tracking, and the website out front, all running on tooling we own and support.

What we build.

Six practice areas, all delivered by the same operator. The person you talk to is the one writing the code, claiming the listings, and answering the phone when something needs a fix.

Custom business apps

Mobile-first apps that replace the patchwork of spreadsheets, paper invoices, and one-off tools small operators get stuck with.

  • Quoting · invoicing · payments
  • Customer 360 with photos & history
  • Service plans & subscriptions
  • P&L, expenses, recurring revenue
  • PDF generation & offline mode

Websites & brand

Editorial, mobile-first websites with proper schema and accessibility — plus the brand guide and print collateral to match.

  • Static, fast, schema-rich sites
  • JSON-LD · OG · WCAG basics
  • Cloudflare Pages deploys
  • Brand systems & photo direction
  • Print-ready PDFs

Local SEO & listings

Get found where customers actually look — Google Maps, Yelp, BBB, Angi — with weekly audit cycles to keep score against competitors.

  • Google Business Profile setup
  • Citation & directory sweeps
  • Weekly audit + competitor scan
  • Schema, meta & technical SEO
  • Service / location pages

Hosting & infrastructure

We host what we build. Backups, monitoring, and uptime are part of the deal — no waiting on a vendor's support queue.

  • Cloudflare Pages + Tunnel + R2
  • PocketBase on managed VPS
  • Daily encrypted backups
  • Uptime Kuma monitoring
  • Domain & DNS management

Print & field tools

Trifold service brochures, post-job leave-behinds, door hangers, and QR-coded review cards — designed to match your digital brand.

  • Trifold service brochures
  • 4.25 × 11 door hangers
  • QR review & payment cards
  • Print-ready PDFs at 300dpi

Operator support

The work doesn't end at launch. We retain a small roster of clients on a monthly support plan for fixes, tweaks, and improvements.

  • Bug fixes & small features
  • Monthly SEO audit + report
  • Backup & uptime monitoring
  • One working session per month

CH·03 / Process

How an engagement runs.

A small studio doesn't need a big process. Four phases, one decision-maker on each side, working software in week two.

01 · Discovery

Walk the job

30–60 min call. Look at how you actually run today — phones, paper, spreadsheets. Find the two or three things that hurt most.

02 · Spec & quote

One-page plan

You get a written design spec, a fixed scope, and a fixed price. No hourly billing, no surprises, scope additions quoted separately.

03 · Build & deploy

Working in week two

Iterative build with a live preview URL. You see it grow — quote screen, customer screen, PDFs, marketing site.

04 · Operate

We host, you run

Backups, monitoring, fixes — we keep the lights on. Monthly support plan optional but recommended.

CH·04 / Pricing

Honest, fixed-price packages.

Three starting shapes. Most engagements blend pieces of all three — happy to scope a custom package on a discovery call.

CH·05 / Infrastructure

We host what we build.

Most studios pass you off to a hosting plan. We don't. Every Bourn Labs system runs on infrastructure we operate, monitor, and back up — so when something needs a fix, you call one number.

Frontends ship to Cloudflare Pages with custom domains and a global edge. Backends run on a managed VPS with PocketBase behind a Cloudflare Tunnel, so the database is never exposed to the public internet. Daily encrypted backups land in Cloudflare R2. Health checks run every 60 seconds in Uptime Kuma.

The same setup big SaaS companies pay six figures for — sized down for a small business, and quiet enough that you'll never have to think about it.

CH·06 / Questions

A few common questions.

Things owners ask on the first call. If yours isn't here, ask on the call — the answer's better than anything we'd write in advance.

Are you a freelancer or an agency?
Neither, really. Bourn Labs is a one-operator studio — closer to a small architecture practice than a software agency. We take on a few clients at a time and work with each one directly. The person you talk to writes the code, claims the listings, and answers the phone.
Do I own the code and the data?
Yes. Code lives in a private GitHub repo we hand off whenever you ask. Data lives in your own database; we hand over admin credentials at launch. If you ever decide to leave, you take everything with you. No vendor lock-in.
Why not just use Jobber or ServiceTitan?
For some businesses those are the right answer. For ours — small operators who want to keep monthly costs low and the workflow shaped exactly to how they actually run — a custom hub costs less over a couple of years and feels like the business actually owns its own software. We'll tell you on the discovery call if we think you'd be better off with an off-the-shelf product.
What happens if something breaks at 11pm?
Uptime Kuma pages me on the first failed health check. For most issues we fix and redeploy without you ever noticing. For real outages we'll call you with what we know and what we're doing about it. Monthly support plan covers all of that.
Can you take over an existing website or system?
Often, yes. We've moved sites from Netlify, GoDaddy builders, and Squarespace; we've migrated business data from Google Sheets and Apps Script into proper databases. The discovery call is where we find out whether a takeover or a clean rebuild is the better path.
Do you do design only, or marketing only, or just dev?
We work end to end — design, build, deploy, host, market — because that's where small businesses get the most value from a small studio. If you only need one piece, we can scope that, but we don't sub out work to other studios.
CH·07 / Get in touch

Let's see if we're a fit.

Best fit: trade or hospitality businesses with one or two owners and a real backlog of operational pain. We take on a small number of clients — quality over volume.

A 30-minute discovery call costs nothing and ends with a one-page write-up of what we'd build, what it would cost, and what it would change. If we're not the right shop, we'll say so and point you at someone who is.
